How do you make thin lips look fuller with makeup?

Line right on the edge, choose mid-tones and add a touch of shine in the centre — volume without fillers.

Try it on

Thin lips can look much fuller with makeup alone. The secret is light: light shades and shine bring lips forward; very dark, matte shades make them look smaller.

Step by step

  1. Line right on the edge. With a pencil matching your lips or one shade deeper, line exactly on your natural edge, especially the Cupid's bow and the centre of the lower lip. Going one millimetre over in the centre is the limit — any more shows.
  2. Blend the liner inwards. That avoids a harsh line and adds dimension.
  3. Colour in mid-tones. Pinks, rosy nudes or soft mauves. Avoid very dark burgundies and browns, which shrink the lip.
  1. Light in the centre. A touch of gloss or highlighter only in the centre of the lower lip creates the fuller-lip effect.

The nude that doesn't erase you

With thin lips, a nude that's too pale can make your mouth almost disappear. Look for one or two shades deeper than your natural colour.

Compare a few in the try-on: put them side by side and notice which gives your lips the most visual volume.

Frequently asked questions

Matte or gloss for thin lips?

Gloss adds more volume. If you love matte, pair it with a touch of shine in the centre.

Can I wear dark lips if mine are thin?

Yes, but line very precisely and add a little shine in the centre so they don't look smaller.
